| Bio: | Greetings. The name is Douglas Cohen, but around these parts I go with Slushmaster. If you've heard of me, it's probably in my capacity as assistant editor at Realms of Fantasy Magazine. I'm also one of the web editors to our lovely website (http://www.rofmagazine.com). Also, my first story, a dark fantasy novelette called "Feelings of the Flesh," recently premiered in the September/October issue of Interzone (http://www.ttapress.com). My chief responsibility as assistant editor with RoF is finding publishable manuscripts from among the submissions we are regularly inundated with. Those authors whose stories go on to become published are called "slush survivors." Here are the slush survivors I've found so far, along with related info: 1. Karen Abrahamson--"Lady of Ashuelot"--Arthuriana--April 2006--Karen's tale was the very first piece of slush I plucked from the piles. Yay, Karen! You make me look so talented. :) 2. Renee Bennett--"Cold Drake"--High Fantasy--August 2006--A very old-school storytelling voice that sucks you right into the tale. *Honorable Mention in YEAR'S BEST FANTASY & HORROR: 20TH ANNUAL COLLECTION, edited by Ellen Datlow and Gavin Grant & Kelly Link 3. *Ken Scholes--"Of Metal Men and Scarlet Thread and Dancing With the Sunrise"--Science-Fantasy--August 2006--Action Jackson is how I'd classify this story, because the pacing, imagery, tension, and world-building are all tremendous. *Locus Recommended Reading List 2006 **Reprinted in BEST NEW FANTASY 2 from Prime Books, edited by Sean Wallace ***Honorable Mention in YEAR'S BEST SCIENCE FICTION: 24TH ANNUAL COLLECTION, edited by Gardner Dozois ****Ken's novel, The PSALMS of ISAAK: LAMENTATION, set in the same world as "Of Metal Men," is going to be published by Tor Books in January, 2009. 4. *Scott William Carter--"The Grand Mal Reaper"--Superhero Fiction--August 2006--Sometimes the greatest heroes are those forgotten because of their heroism ... *Honorable Mention in YEAR'S BEST FANTASY & HORROR: 20TH ANNUAL COLLECTION, edited by Ellen Datlow and Gavin Grant & Kelly Link 5. Sarah Totton--"A Fish Story"--Funny Fantasy--October 2006--I worked with Sarah on a revision before we passed this story up the editorial ladder. It's a laugh-a-minute tale about refusing to let "the one who got away" get away. *Reprinted in FANTASY: BEST OF THE YEAR 2007 from Prime Books, edited by Rich Horton **Honorable Mention in YEAR'S BEST SCIENCE FICTION: 24TH ANNUAL COLLECTION, edited by Gardner Dozois 6. E. Catherine Tobler--"Indigo With Distance"--Magic Realism--August 2006--Sometimes tragedy is the most necessary component to the fairy tale ... 7. A.C. Wise--"Robin of the Green"--Robin Hood Fantasy--June 2006--Sometimes the story everyone knows is just the story everyone has been led to believe ... 8. Amanda Downum--"Snake Charmer"--Urban Gothic--October 2006--The line between vengeance and necessity is thin, about as thin as the one between life and death ... *Reprinted in BEST NEW FANTASY 2 from Prime Books, edited by Sean Wallace **Honorable Mention in YEAR'S BEST FANTASY & HORROR: 20TH ANNUAL COLLECTION, edited by Ellen Datlow and Gavin Grant & Kelly Link 9. Jon Hansen--"In the Lair of the Moonmen"--Sword and Planet--December 2006--Bringing to mind the classic pulps of years past, this stylish piece is fun reading, featuring a sharp wit that would make Fritz Leiber proud. 10. **Euan Harvey--"The Tao of Crocodiles"--Dark Fantasy--April 2007--Dreams can be scarier than you know, especially dreams of the Tao ... 11. David Pinault--"Afghan Buddha Payback"--Contemporary Fantasy--June 2007--David marks the first author I've fished out of the slush with no fiction credits whatsoever. My first discovery if you will. And without a doubt this is one of the quirkier pieces I've passed along, but that's to be expected when art thieves, the Buddha, and the Taliban are all thrown into the same stew ... 12. Trent Hergenrader--"Black Jack Davy"--Wild West Fantasy---April 2007--The Wild West meets our beloved fantasy genre in this entertaining tale of guns, ghosts, and gals. 13. Elizabeth Glover--"MetaPhysics"--Funny Fantasy--August 2007--Elizabeth and I were friends before she ever submitted to the magazine, at least while I've been working here. Not that I made things easy on her. "Tweak the ending if you want me to pass this along," I told her. She tweaked. The result? Elizabeth now has her first sale. Congrats, babe! 14. Von Carr--"The White Isle"--High Fantasy--December 2007--Von and I worked on some light revisions before passing this one up the editorial ladder. A dark tale about how sometimes love doesn't quite conquer all ... 15. Greg O. Weatherford--"Under the Skin"--YA Fantasy--Forthcoming--Another first sale. We've all heard that it's what's inside that counts. For some this holds more true than others ... 16. Sharon Mock--"All Beautiful Things"--Dark Fantasy--Forthcoming--Happily ever after is all in the eye of the beholder ... 17. Vylar Kaftan--"The Luckiest Street in Georgia"--Magic Realism--Forthcoming--Vylar and I worked on some light revisions before passing this one along. A subtle tale examining whether time controls love or love controls time. Or perhaps they go hand in hand ... 18. William H. Wandless--"Pumpkin Jumper"--Middle-Grade Fantasy--Forthcoming--That which is beyond our reach is sometimes better left as such ... 19. Aliette de Bodard--"Desaparecidos"--Contemporary Fantasy--Forthcoming--Angels helping mortals is expected, but what happens when it's the other way around? 20. ??? *Author's name--Indicates the author has made a subsequent sale to RoF. | |||||
